Pottsey Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Our kids have just realised they can type random strings of numbers or letters to get adult pictures. Simple things like typing “aa†bring up adult picture even with adult filters on. Filtering by keywords only goes so far, now they use random letters and numbers I have little choice but to flat out ban image serching. They also use various names like “Anna marieâ€. Are there any children friendly image search engines? I just wrote up a document on how to use MS word online clipart but that doesn’t cover cartoon characters like Sonic, fast cars, Spiderman and various other subjects. PS if your in a classroom don’t test out AA or Anna marie.
Geoff Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Fails miserably against the content filter here (dansguardian + squid on Linux). 'Safe' results are returned. Indiviual images are blocked in the search results. What filtering software are you using?
Gatt Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Using DG & Squid here too so shouldn't be a problem - I tend to set asside a good couple of hours and wade thru the Log List & Webalizer to find out what the little darlings have been accessing. Also made damn sure that Edugeek was banned! Don't want the buggers on here !
Pottsey Posted October 13, 2006 Author Posted October 13, 2006 Not much really. I setup Yahoo and Google to not show adult content. Then we use NetSweeper to filter out websites and keywords and to block everything apart from the what’s onj the OK list at dinner and break. Never heard of DG & Squid guess I need to invest in some decent software.
Gatt Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 DansGuardian & Squid are linux based Squid usually comes with all good Linux Distro's (I Use OpenSuSE 10.1) and Dansguardian can be downloaded from http://dansguardian.org
Pottsey Posted October 13, 2006 Author Posted October 13, 2006 Well DansGuardian & Squid it is. I know nothing about Linux this should be an interesting learning curve. There is a Linux box hosting a forum here but I had nothing to do with setting it up. Hopefully its powerful enough for DansGuardian & Squid. Thanks for the advice.
Gatt Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Mine hosts DG/Squid & Pupil Intranet. Would advise you get hold of Webmin - a web-based Admin tool - theres a DG module available from Dansguardian.org Good luck
bazM Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 We use http://www.picsearch.com; it has "family friendliness" according to their site. its not 100% safe but better than google images.

SpuffMonkey Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 At the risk of being boring - you could download this (for example) http://www.dalmatech.com/category_resources_subcategory_vmware_appliance.html and one of these http://www.vmware.com/products/free_virtualization.html and be up and running in 5 mins...
