Got a HP Proliant ML350 which is not booting!

The problem is that its not POSTing, you can hear the it start when you

press the power button, but theres no beeps or anything.

 

I assumed it was a VGA issue, and that 'HALT on Error' option was selected in th bios

thus causing it not to POST when it detected that there was no VGA output.

 

So i got a PCI VGA card and put it in the server, and it worked fine for a week, until i had to restart

it due some updates, and then the same thing happend again.

 

The school wants to get a new server, so im not to worried about getting it fixed, but want ideas

on how to access/recover the data that is on the hard drives which are on a RAID array

 

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Have you reseated all of the connections inside?

Clean the memory contacts, carefully with contact cleaner whilst grounded.

This fixes most post problems, after that check the PSU.

It depends on what type of array you have. If you have a standalone SmartArray card in there it should be quite easy. Simply find another server or workstation (maybe) with the appropriate slot on the motherboard and transplant the card then use the extra length in the cables to connect the SCSI (assumed) cable over to the going machine. It sounds like it is still supplying power so the controller should be able to spin up the drives and access them once the right drivers are in windows (on the existing hd in temp pc).

 

If the controller is blown then it is still not too bad as the SmartArray cards have portable volumes so if you plug the whole hotswap tray into another one of the same or later vintage it will access them fine (so long as it includes the same interface type ie. SCSI.

 

 

If you have used the internal RAID then you may have issues depending on the one included. They may be portable but it is less likely.
