Windows 7 strange behaviour

I'm having a really strange problem with Windows 7 at the moment, I have done numerous clean installs with various cpu's and motherboards on my pc. The problem i'm getting is certain devices disappear i.e video, network, usb. I try to force drivers as windows tells me that I already have the best software installed, but windows reports the device as not available. What am I doing wrong?

Doesn't matter now, reinstalling XP after another failed windows 7. This is what happened, clean install, windows update no problem, installed office 2007 restart, devices missing.

 

 

Can an admin lock this please
