USB Fault.

Having a bit of trouble with USB memory stick and possibly all USB devices.

 

We run a Windows Server 2003 (32 bit) Service Pack 2 enviroment with XP (32 bit) service pack 3 clients.

 

An entire trolly of 15 laptops (HP 4510s) are not detecting USB memory sticks when connected. No sound is played and no driver is attempted to load. If I check in disk management there are no disks (except the install devices, HDD, CD etc...)

 

This is also effecting several other desktops randomly about the school, including my own office PC!

 

Any help or experience with a similar problem is appreciated.

Plug and Play issues?

 

Do they work if you reboot the machine's with the USB plugged in?

 

If so, perhaps take a look at these keys:

 

Enable Universal Plug and Play Device Host

Open your registry and find the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\upnphost]. Set the value of "Start" to "3" to enable it.

 

Disable UnPnP Discovery Service

Open your registry and find the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SSDPSRV]. Set the value of "Start" to "3" to enable it.

 

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

The Autorun.inf nasty? We've got a bit of a problem with it at the moment.

 

Also, check that a gpo hasn't been set to knock out the usb drives in AD on your server.
