I appreciate that there's going to be a ton of threads that cover bits or possibly the majority of this query but I thought I'd ask anyway as time (thanks to the baby) is incredibly short at present.

I'm moving a home server system over to VMWare and because the converter has been a complete bust I figure now is the time to convert to Win2k8 R2 as I have a partner license from MS and I might as well learn now.

My initial requirement is really to do the following:

- prep domain to 2k8 R2

Migrate:

- DNS

- DHCP

- various roles (schema, etc..)

- file server shares, etc... (figure shifting to a DFS path would be smartest for future migrations)

- printers

Has anyone got a list of bookmarks, resources or even a How to... guide/wiki article that covers that lot (especially the hard won intel of gotcha's to watch out for).. Feel free to berate me but time is so tight it's barely able to squeak..

Cheers

Well, I've been discovering my own "how to" guide over a sleepless evening so here's a few resources I've found useful.

Transferring FSMO roles

Transferring FSMO Roles in Windows Server 2008

For problems when you get "RPC Server is Unavailable" from your new Win2k8 system:

I also found that if you're trying to debug dcdiag /test:dns errors then often you can resolve them by specifying the DNS server(s) in your NIC's TCP/IP settings even if you set 127.0.0.1
