backup exec licenses

we bought a backup exec agent license for sql server.

SYMC BACKUP EXEC AGENT FOR MSFT SQL

12.5 WIN PER SERVER STD LIC GOV BAND S

 

the serial number on the certificate gives me access to symantec filelocker where I downloaded all the files for BE12.5

 

however our backup exec install is only 10d and when it doesn't appear to recognise the sql license keys....am I supposed to upgrade be to 12.5?

We had a similar issue a while back - the license keys are not backwards compatible, so you're expected to buy licenses for everything for the latest version.

 

We were also told that they couldn't provide the older license codes any more.

Thats why I gave up on Backupexec, the licensing model stinks and is overly complicated and very expensive. Now using yosemite and it's a joy to use and configure.

I'm looking at Yosemite for next year - BExec is pretty poor. Support is abysmal and every time I've replaced a tape drive I've had to spend days getting BE to recognise it and use it without errors.

Another case of Symantec (and others) screwing up a good product.

 

In the good old days of Backup Exec (and Storage Manager) when it was Palindrome, it was the bees knees.

 

Actually, I'm left wondering now if BE was Palindrome... This is going back to my old Netware 3.x days.

That yosemite looks pretty cool, not least as unlimited and its competitive upgrade from backup exec offer

I managed to get a downgraded SQL license for 10d but then discovered the windows agent is incompatible with server 2008 which has the sql on.

Anyone using it with DFS?
