toshiba satellite a10

I have a toshiba satellite a10 that i recently put back to factory fresh. After installing all the updates it will not run on the battery unless i first start it on ac power first. I unplug the ac and it will then run fine on the battery. Checking the icon in the lower right tray it tells me i am on ac power when i am running on battery. Also the battery does charge to full when the computer is off. What would cause this problem.
