domain trust issues

As we are migrating to a new domain, but I still want users to access some folders on the old domain for a while, I want to set up a trust between the two DCs (old domain is win2000 and new is win2003).

 

Therefore I created a one way trust so that users on the new domain can be authenticated on the old domain and I can then set permissions on the old folders.

 

The setup seems to go ok in that the trust is established and verified. I then go to set the permissions on the first folder and that works ok too (I can set permissions for users of the new domain). Great!

 

However, when I move on the next folder I get an error that the new domain DC is not available. If I then try to verify the trust, both servers report that the other server is not available. However they can both resolve each others name and are available. Also the permissions are working on the folder so that users of the new domain *can* access the folder on the old domain, so there must be authentication happening right?

 

If I remove the trust and re-establish it then I can set permissions on another folder, but then when I try another I get the same error about the server not being available.

 

I have managed to set permissions on a few folders by re-establishing the trust each time but its getting old fast.

Anyone have a clue what I am doing wrong?

Yeah DNS.

 

Basically the old DC was using itself for DNS, I pointed it to the new server and it all worked
