MSDE the instance name specified is invalid

Hi all

 

Can anyone advise me on installing MSDE when i get an error message that reads the instance name specified is invalid... ive searched the net to find a solution but have failled so was wondering if anyone can help out on here??

Hi.

 

Are you running setup via the command line, with switches, or double clicking on a setup.exe?

 

If it's the former, what is the command line you are using?

 

If it's the latter, please paste the contents of your setup.ini here.

Lovely, thanks. It looks OK though!

 

Have you by some chance already got MSDE installed on that machine? If you install it and then run the install again, this is the error that pops up.

 

Have a look at Services under admin tools and see if you have one in there called "MSSQLSERVER".

Hmmm.

 

I have had a bit of a play with this app in the past and have only ever seen this error under the circumstances described, unfortunately!

 

You say it's a brand new Windows install - is it an install that you personally have performed, and is there any other software on the machine (e.g. backup software)? The reason I ask is that some software installs also install MSDE (although admittedly it's unusual to install to a default instance under these circumstances - am clutching slightly!).

 

Did you double check the services list?

while i am trying to install the msde 2000, this "the instance name specified is invalid" error has come. anybody help me how to install the msde 2000. pls help me as early as possible.
