The main requirement is that it must support 6 SATA drives; 2 RAID 1 for OS, with 4 RAID 5 for data. A single processor with 4 GB RAM would be good. For the data drives something around 1 TB each. I've had a quick go at configuring using the Dell website and they want £340 per 1 TB SATA drive; which seems pretty expensive. Many thanks for taking the time to read and respond.

CyberNerd Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Network fileserver isn't going to need as fast disk access so for a fileserver I would go for SATA, for something that needs fast disk access such as a database(driven) server, virtual machine host then have SAS.

FN-GM Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 SAS are much faster, we use them because when you have 500 users writing to them it would prove better. - We have 800 clients so say 200 free, although allot of the time all IT rooms are in full use. I have also found them to be more reliable. They are also cheaper than SCSI We the google bit. I replied on my iPhone and it isnt easy typing on there so it would save me lots of time.
Ric_ Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 @FN-GM: I doubt that your hard disks are the bottleneck in that system (unless you have a massive aggregated link into your server).
