Links to Files Help

Our Joomla is used for staff intranet.

We have links on their to Excel files that staff use regularly.

The problem is that its opening the files in IE. So they don't get the full excel menu for borders etc. I have changed the link to open in a new window but its still the same. Is it possible to get it to open in Excel ?

OK found the solution but can't get it to work. I need to link to excel first then to the file.

Did a command line:

"C:/Program%20Files/Microsoft%20Office/office/excel.exe S:/_teacher%20admin/the%20staffroom/pupil%20notices.xls"

which works fine.

But when I put that into Joomla it changes it to

http://2003server:84/C:/Program%20Files/Microsoft%20Office/office/excel.exe S:/_teacher%20admin/the%20staffroom/pupil%20notices.xls

Even tried adding file:/// but still the same.

I have code cleanup turned off.

The only solution I can think of is to maybe use a file management component in joomla and upload the files to joomla, I use Phoca download but there is other ones.

Thanks but can't really do that as the file needs to sit in a folder on the server.
