If I'm understanding you correctly, you can't just 'make up' a domain name - that's not how the Internet works - you need to submit a request through an appropriate agent for a small fee. I'm sure other members could recommend some.

As for hosting a website yourself, you could quite easily do this but you'd have to compare the cost of someone hosting it for you against the expense and knowledge/hours needed to maintain your own.

I use xilo to host the domain/site

it's not really worth doing it inhouse, as you have to keep security/patchs as tight as possible which will proberly cost you more in the long run than letting a host do it all for you.

As suggested above use the eduJoomla package.

Our website is hosted with our ISP and we buy our Domain name separately for our school.

I too can recommend CSNewMedia I have a personal site with them, I'm sure Carl could provide a one stop shop for your domain name needs and hosting requirements.

As for the site itself, you could you a html template, there is lots out there but your gonna need to know a little about HTML to edit it to your liking.

As mentioned above Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal the list goes on, are Content management Systems which with a little learning involved you can have a website up and live in a matter of days.
