Hi im trying to get some apparently dodgy computers to show there faults and i could really use either a hard drive stress tester or a system stress tester. Anyone know any free software i could download as i haven't found anything :(

Cheers

For CPU/RAM I find prime95 to be the best choice. memtest usually says all is ok, Prime95 will often show a fault though (nearly always RAM unless you are overclocking)

Personally, I wouldn't go for a hard drive stress tester - you're better off using a program to give you information on its stability and health. As you all know, I'm a big believer in Spinrite.

Get it from Steve Gibson's site - Home of Gibson Research Corporation

He also does an awesome security podcast on the TWIt network (and all the mp3s & transcripts to them are on grc too)

Well worth the money (it's not free - but it's VITAL to serious tech's software tools arsenal!)

PS: Remember, you get the 100% money back NQA guarantee - but it's not needed :)

PPS: I'm not on commission - just had it save my bacon a few times.

(and it's good for preventative measures)

If you're after a free stress tester, there's a free version of SiSoft's Sandra I think.

(Very good diags and hardware reporting)

Hard disk is kind of difficult, but I find that it will nearly always show as long pauses when booting/loading an app. Usually acompanied by disk events in the system log, crc warnings etc.
