CHR1S Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 So, any Satelite gurus amongst us? I am knocking up a HTPC and already have VM and an old Sly dish on the wall outside. Is there a PCI (half hight) card that can pick up some decent satelite channels with the original Sly dish that dont already come with VM packages like footie from other countries like on Showsports (assuming I can buy a subscription from them ) Mods - Im not asking for advice on soft/hardcams etc and im assuming any channels I pick up are FTA in some way or another. Thanks
sted Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 freesats easy uses same dish etc as sky so just add a dual lnb(quad if you want to keep existing setup) and that will give you fta channels and if you use win 7 i believe it copes with hd fta. subscriptions are as far as im aware the problem as the cards dont usually support the decoder card (though i believe i once saw one that worked with sky) 1
mrcrazy04 Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 I believe there is some hardware that allows a sky card to be used to gain access to any subscriptions you have. However I'm not sure if it would work with the new incarnation of the sky card as they've just replaced them. 1
plexer Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 The encryption hasn't been changed so they would work. Other channels you can use a card reader to use an official card. 1
RabbieBurns Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 I built a box with a TechniSat SkyStar 2 TV PCI card, using ProgDVB as the software, but had to buy a Infinity USB WB Electronics to get the Sky card working. 1
CHR1S Posted October 5, 2009 Author Posted October 5, 2009 Thanks for the info guys, are there any other options other than freesat and Sly?
RabbieBurns Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 freesat is basically just a brand name/gimmick for just a box and a dish that lets you pick up the FTA channels. Your own dish with a PCI/USB card and some software, will have the same channels. Ive got a subscription to AlJezeera Sports 1-8 which give me all the SPL, champions league etc, and is a fraction of the cost of Sky Sports. 1
plexer Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 There are loads of other sats up there to choose from but with a small dish you will only pick strong ones, the most common ones people tune to after 28 east which is sky/freesat are 19 east astra and 13 eat hotbird. You can buy subscriptions to different providers on these. Check out LyngSat - Lyngemark Satellite Ben 1
RabbieBurns Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 A good site to show what satellites and channels sports stuff is being broadcast on is http://www.liveonsat.com It also lists the FTA broadcasts. 1
