audio input on win7

I cannot for the life of me work out how to get the microphone working on windows 7. Its built in to the laptop, and it does work because if I unmute the volume output of it, I can hear myself talking to it through the speakers, and it gives loud feedback etc.

 

In xp i would just mute the volume out of the mic, and set the input level medium high.

 

How is it done in windows 7?

update audio drivers and if you have realtek or something like that then try and use realteks audio manager / utility to set microphone settings as well as select it as the audio input device.

drivers are latest, its not a driver issue. Its just a windows 7 how the hell do i set it up issue.

If you can hear yourself when the mic is unmuted, that suggests the input is setup as a pass through, try this to fix it.

right click the volume icon in the task bar -> recording devices -> select the microphone -> properties -> listen tab. then check that listen to this device is Unchecked.

Got it sorted. Tried the latest software from the realtek site (updated 29th sept) but it caused windows to bluescreen on bootup. Removed that.

 

There were 2 microphone devices listed in the volume control thing, so I managed to get one working by disabling the other one. It all works great now. And thanks for the tip about disabling the passthrough.

 

I can use skype now without having to reboot to ubuntu

 

Just need to get the video camera working now..
