for 100 VMs... utilising the vmsafe api and uses a custom (windows) VM (that requires a licence) to do the scanning directly on the VMFS. The VM itself just handles scheduling.

I've not tried this yet, i'm not advocating it either, just some info.

Erm, it's only the IDS bit that's free. The AV stuff is a different product.

Saw this at VMworld this year. Was interesting

 

There was a good presentation (TA3105) on "Long distance vMotion" by VMware which raised a few eyebrows. It might be worth a look.
