3.x migrate windows settings

hi,

ive just been redoing my ghost images, but now everytime a new user logs in a get a pop up message about migrating settings,

 

any one come across this and know how to get rid of it.

does this happen even if you have reset there profile?

ive done a clean install of XP,

installed a number of programs, saved the image,

 

i was just testing the image (making sure all the programs work when the students log on)

 

but every new user that logs on get's this message.

 

it'll be one of the programs that ive installed that is causing it but theres 30+ programs that have been installed.

 

i could probably narrow it down to one of the older ones, but i really cant be arsed to start from scrach, install 1 program and test, install next program and test etc

 

when the user account is created, in the registry it creates a key,

hkey_current_user\windows 3.1 migration status\ with a couple of sub keys.

 

ive tried copying this to the

hkey_users\.default\

Just look for an app that's written before 1995 or has problem with long file names.

 

Also have a look in the quoted files WIN.INI or CONTROL.INI to see if they mention any of the apps you have installed. In fact why not use FileMon ( from SysInternals) to see which apps access those files.

 

You can also use RegMon (again from SysInternals) to see if any program actually interrogates the migratio status key.

 

As ZeroHour suggested does the error occur if you use a fresh profile?

Have you added those files and registry entries to your default profile?

ive added the reg keys.

Check your msi's

Have you got machine based installs or user based ones?

Do any do "self-heal" if they dont have the keys/files in the profile dir?

Check out for 3.1 apps. You can tell if they are because of the 16bit UI (aka no proper xp theme support)

managed to sort it out,

copied the ntuser.dat file from a user to the default user.

 

will try and find out which prog was causing it. but need to go round and ghost all the machines over the next couple of days.

Just FYI ntuser.dat stores the users registry hive.

You don't have to reghost the machines. Just download a correct Default User profile on each machine. My preference is to update the whole profile. Copying just the ntuser.dat is a bit rough and ready.

 

I assume you are using cached profiles. If you are using mandatory profiles then you may need to update the template. If you are using romaing profiles things are a little trickier. You'd have to either admin templates or scripted reg editing. If this seems too much like hard work you could just let the users click the default and which will be remembered on future logons.

the students aren't a problem they could probably deal with clicking a button, its the staff that would p_ss me off, you all know what there like.

 

the other thing is i have deep freeze installed on most of the pc's so it would reset everytime.

 

seems to okay now, still need to to 1 more image so will try and find out which program was causing it.

Turn deepfreeze off just while you adjust the default profile.
