push printers setup as default

i have setup a printer and deployed with a gpo and the push printer connection exe. my question is how do i specify what the default printer is per computer /ou. so i have a ou with 20 pc's in side all with the printer deployed using push printer.exe and just in that room i want to set the default for that room

I had the same problem and found out you can only set the default when you upgrade the servers of windows 2008. I am sticking with the script I have always used till I upgrade.

from what i can remember it is set in alphabetical order so you could bodge it by putting a higher letter infront of the one you don't want to be default.

Not sure if this will help but here goes nevertheless:

 

We use Kix scripts to allocate printers to students and staff. For students the printer they get depends upon the OU the students are in. For staff the printer they get is governed by the station name [case select in the script determines which printers are allocated]

 

Either way there is a statement in the Kix script sets which printer is default if more than one printer is available to the user. I can post details of the scripts tomorrow if that will help.

 

The one little issue I have with this is that for a small number of users the script will run and a local printer which should be default is deselected for for the default. Still working to solve this one.

Group policy preferences an option?

 

I've started moving my printers over from local installs on each workstation to a GPP from a Windows 2008 member server (rest of the domain is 2003/xp) and setting the printer for the user and enabling the loopback on the policy lets me set the default and so far seems to have been working great.

Indeed - targeted user GPP printer deployment works fine for me (I haven't needed loopback, just put some carefully targeted preferences in one user GPO that hits all the users)
