MkII Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 Just came across a couple of sites that list those shameful pieces of software that require admin rights. Hall of Shame Hall of Shame #2 As it's been a feature here on Edugeek too I wondered if people thought it'd be a good idea to have a similar list on our Wiki? Whadduyafink?
kmount Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 I think it would be a great idea as long as it's actively maintained. An Appdeploy.com MSI Knowledgebase style section might be useful, targetted at 'common' apps in education, perhaps sharing best practice for those times where you're thrown a bit of software and told it needs to be done within the hour. Of course, can't be sharing MSI's (if copyrighted/etc) but the knowledge behind it could be handy in one place.
PiqueABoo Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 Would need precise versions and I would let s/w qualify if it has other irksome attributes e.g. - incapable of saving data anywhere but in the local All Users profile. - doesn't work if (roaming) appdata is folder redirected. - has it's own file open/save dialog that doesn't honour Explorer policy on drive visibility etc. - depends on and includes an ancient version of [X] which trashes any current version. X can be lots of things, for instance Shockwave.
MkII Posted August 29, 2009 Author Posted August 29, 2009 Totally agree on the MSI knowledgebase Kim. Thanks PiqueABoo, those are exactly what'd be useful.
