How do you know an image is right?!

Ok, this has to be the daftest of all my questions so far......

 

I've just completed my first image that was done by me and only me (what!? i hear you gasp, yes its true im afraid!). I sysprepped, i created an image with ghost cast, i then restored that image to another machine and apart from falling for that legacy Sata trick again it seems happy. Done some quick tests and it seems to tick all the boxes.

 

Is there anything else that i should check, something thats common when images havent gone the way you want them too. I dont wanna go and put it on 7 more machines to find a bug or something....

 

This is my lack of confidence talking by the way!

If it's worked on a seperate machine, you shouldnt have any issues.

 

One thing I would highly recomend is doing a Pre-Sysprep and then a sysprep.

It takes up twice the diskspace but when you want to add software and change configs etc, makes it so much easier without having to start from scratch!

Imaging is something you do better with experience, however even the more experienced of us make mistakes - myself included.

 

I think thoroughly testing an image and running programs as a test user is definitely the way to go

A machine can be re-syspreped more than once.... I have some here, that i have modified and gathered more than 20 times.... lol

 

 

1 thing I used to forget with image gathering is leaving a static IP..... can be a bit of a PITA.....

I'm curious, surely when preparing a machine and installing applications etc, don't you have a DHCP server running? Either a router or of course Windows Server itself.

Before we had smoothwall, the only way to have unfiltered internet was with a static address, which pointed to a different gateway....
