problems with PC sound

We have a couple of XP Pro PCs here at school that are connected to IWBs and external speakers. On all the PCs except these 2, plugging in the speaker cable disables the PC Speaker.

 

How do I stop it using the speaker in the PC when external speakers are connected? I'm sure it's simple, but I'm hot and tired and I've been in since 7am setting up for our open day!

Is it plugged into the headphone socket (usually lime green colour) that should disable the speaker. I've got to go in now to het ready for the "Dreaded Visit" on Wednesday/Thursday!

I would look at the motherboard manual and see if there is a jumper setting for this or it may be you need to configure the sound driver software.

 

what motherboard manufacture and model is it?

It's plugged into the correct socket - I get sound from both speakers and the PC itself, it's just the PC sound doesn't cut out when the speakers are connected. It doesn't when you plug headphones into the front socket either

 

PEO: Both machines are HP... at this precise moment, I haven't got the time to look for motherboard models... I'll have to do it later

I think it's a software problem... there's probably something you can change in the driver settings somewhere.

 

The reason I think this - I have a similar problem with my hp dc7800. When it was running Windows, the headphone socket did indeed switch off the internal speaker. I wiped it and put Linux on it and now if I want to switch off the internal speaker I have to mute the mono output listed in the mixer, the switch doesn't do anything (although personally I prefer that most of the time).

 

If it's an HP the motherboard is probably irrelevant, what model are the computers themselves?
