Notification of new devices

Ive got a fairly simple network at home, the default gateway is the ADSL router and there are 2 gentoo linux servers for all LAN & WAN network services.

 

Ive just got an unmanaged Linksys gigabit switch.. Im looking for a simple way of figuring out and getting notified when new devices are plugged into the network.

 

Currently I check the "attached devices" page in the router http, but thats never accurate, and also I check /var/log/messages for DHCP allocations..

 

Is there something simple I can use that will do this for me?
