Hi,

I've been asked to perform a restore of FMS database. This is just to see that it can actually be done and has been requested by SMT.

I've been in touch with a colleague who has suggested that I stop SQL, copy the ldf/mdf files and then detach the database and then reattach.

We do have SQL Management Studio Express installed which seems a much easier method but I hear there are issues with usernames and passwords.

Annoying there seems to be no documentation on it (from what I can see)

Are there any issues I should be aware of before going ahead?

You need to recover from a backup? Or do a test restore?

Basically, there is a known issue with the backup not having the user creds, they are stored in the MASTER and they should be backed up into the .bak file.

Assuming the masters is still the same, ie you don't move servers, you should be able to run dbattach with the /restoreui switch fine. Make sure you use the FMS dbattach (mssql\binn\fmssql\dbattach) not the SIMS one (mssql\binn\dbattach).

If you want to ensure the backup contains the user creds, deattach, reattach etc tents to work, there is however, a /masters swich for dbattach, which will backup the MASTER db and there is a nice SQL statement to ensure the creds are inserted into the .bak.

Hope that helps.

EDIT:

Also be aware that SIMS and FMS "talk" and therefore they must be restored\backup at the same time. Unless you want to pay Capita £££.

Thanks matt40k,

On your last sentence,

Also be aware that SIMS and FMS "talk" and therefore they must be restored\backup at the same time. Unless you want to pay Capita £££.

are you saying I need to restore FMS and Sims together?

Yes, you can normally get away with it, I'm not sure the exact details, I've not tested it much. I know it's something to do with the flags in FMS and P7 (SIMS). Have a look at KB62503, if that doesn't work, you generally have to send the data off to Capita to have the flags reset.
