Encryption Software that supports Pre-boot authentication

I am after some software for the Mac that can support Pre-boot authentication. I would like a free solution please.

Exactly, but Truecrypt only supports it for Windows

From what I remember of looking at it for a friend a while ago was the general suggestion is buy a hardware-level encyptable disk. Otherwise, FileVault will be plenty adequate for user file security - assuming it's saved within their users folders...

Did think that but i need something to do the whole drive.

Can i ask why?

 

If a user configures their login profile correctly OSX can be as secure on a laptop as windows. File vault is supposed to encrypt the entire user home dir and if the user configures the machine so as you need to login from sleep/screensaver, this should be enough for security? Plus if you configure file vault for them then you can set the master password.

Because not all files will be stored in the user profile. I would also like to prevent users from even booting the laptop full stop if they dont have the key

but TrueCrypt works with MacOSX, there is even a free download here. or am I missing something?

It works with OSZ but doesn't support Pre-boot authentication. Pre-boot authentication is only available for Windows. I currently use Truecrypt on my Mac for my pen drives.

Nothing that was free. I use truecrypt for the Windows side.

 

I am waiting a few months, the new version of MAC OS X supports full disk encryption.

Yep. You will be asked for a username and password (same as user accounts) then it boots into the OS
