voip suppliers - need overseas numbers

Any recommendations of VOIP / SIP services?

 

Based in UK, but most of calls would be to and from Asia, so I would really like to have an Australian and Hong Kong phone number, but not pay too much for them

 

I think this is called a "virtual number" with Direct Dialling Inward (DDI) in UK and Direct Inward Dial (DiD) in US.

VoipTalk supplied a HK freephone incoming number for about 7 pence per minute last time I looked (i.e. the caller pays nothing, you pay 7ppm). I think AUS was about 2 or 3 ppm.

 

They are just known as International Incoming Numbers. A DDI is a Direct Dial Interface, where you lease a block of numbers with the same beginning (e.g. 0800-123xxx) and then allocate extensions with the last bit (internally 266, externally 0800123266).

Agreed. But in the VOIP community the terms are often co-mingled - example;

I also had a look at Voxbone, but it's a wholesale service (minimum spend E1000) per month

I use a company called Voipfone 020 7043 5555. Had a quick look and they only advertise UK, Europe and USA numbers but may be worth a call as they tend to be helpful so should be able to point you in the right direction even if they cant help.

Ok, correction: you only have to spend E500 per month with Voxbone...

 

I've tried Voipfone and drew a blank.

 

 

There are all kinds of 'gotcha' add-ons in VOIP that I wasn't aware of (so..... just like computers then)

 

For example, TerraSip calls are only free to other TerraSip users. And you can't get any UK number for incoming calls without paying for the number.

Voipfone offers great rates for European virtual numbers - but there's an incoming charge per minute for calls made to you through these numbers.

 

I'm thinking now that I should tackle this from the other end, and sign up with a HK or Sydney VOIP provider (ITSP), that way I could avail of any offers that included a bundle of outbound calls.
