Upgrading a server to server 2003 R2

I have not read much about Windows 2003 R2 apart from the Print

facilities and File managing facilities. I was thinking of just putting it

on one or two servers at the moment. All our servers are 2003 but i do not

intend to put in on any of our DC's. Should it be ok just upgrading a

couple of our member servers? and not a DC or do you have to do a DC

first?

 

One of which is the print server(which also contains a few student teacher

home directories) and the other a file server.

 

I don't really want to do a DC yet as we are having a new server in in the

6 weeks to replace one of the DC's

If you have a 2003 server with SP1 you could simply extend your schema so that you can introduce 2003 R2 onto your LAN, and then pop the second CD into your server's CD drive....voila. An "upgrade" from 2003 SP1 to 2003 Server R2 doesn't really exist as far as I know- it's more a case of making sure you make schema changes to reflect the new AD things MS have included and then adding their "feature pack" ;-)

Because of DFS extensions etc., your existing 2003 Server schema will need updating to reflect the new features found in 2003 R2.

 

Don't know if any of that will make more sense- sorry for being vague!
