I can't remove either of them from the Domain, one of the servers is a Domain Controller and the 2nd is an Exchange Server

 

I've tried changing it over to DHCP, it works, picks up a new address, but still isn't connectable on the new address.

Weird how you can get outbound etc no problem, I suppose adding a second network card to the VM might be worth trying?

Now would be a really good time for you to say "oh it's alright, the images are held on an iscsi san we can just restore them onto a new host".

 

Not used HyperV before but can it do seamless transitions onto another physical host? If so, that might be worth a go to prove/disprove the image itself as the issue.

I've tried running the VM image on another host, same issues.

 

I'm busy creating new VMs as we speak so I can at least start the recovery process to a new VM if I can't find a solution in the next few hours.

Interesting twist...

 

I added a 2nd network card to the VM, assigned it an IP and left my laptop pinging the IP of the new network card.

 

No connection, just like the 1st network card and the network card in the other broken server.

 

I'm sitting there talking to somebody when suddenly the 2nd network card starts responding the ping, nothing had happened, nothing had changed, just out of the blue, starts responding....

And then 1 minute later, it stops responding again...

and about 5 minutes later, it responds again for another minutes and then stops...

This keeps happening, the whole time the original network card and IP hasn't responded once.

Can you try fitting another physical nic to the host machine and then allocate this physical nic to the VM?

 

Running out of idea's for you atm

 

Also can you ping the host from the VM and vice versa?

Have you tried putting wireshark on the offending box to see if it can see the traffic incomming. Is all IPSec stuff disabled in the policies that are applied to the box?

Nick did you fix this or end up rebuilding your exchange box?

Hi K-Strider,

 

I ended up rebuilding a new DC and a new Exchange Server in the end, I'm still talking to MS tho as another one of our servers has similar symptoms (Firewall service won't start) but at least this one is still connectable (thank god!)

I will keep everyone posted when I find a solution

i know this is an old thread, but we've this exact issue!!!

 

does anyone know a fix? A reinstall really isn't an option just yet!

Just a quick heads up. I've sorted the issue, It appears the server was getting firewall settings from the GPO. I took these out, did a quick gpupdate /force and it's all working again.

 

Not sure why it suddenly stopped working, wonder if it was one of the recently installed updates.
