Strange DVD playing problem

The scenario:

 

PC running XP SP2 has RealPLayer, Windows Media Player 11 and PowerDVD (antique version) installed on it.

 

This PC happily plays all DVDs, except one: BBC Active - World Environmental Changes

 

This DVD works perfectly in an antique Windows 98 PC, and on a DVD player.

 

On the PC it appears to work in RealPlayer and Media Player, up to a point:

You get the copright bit, then you get a menu. You choose the chapter you want, then choose the subject and it starts playing. But you only get sound, no video pictures

 

With PowerDVD, as long as you are running as administrator, it will do all of the above AND play the video clip too. :sigh:

 

there are no messages in the Event Viewer to indicate a problem.

 

As I don't want to make the teacher an administrator just to play this one DVD through PowerDVD, has anyone got any other ideas please?

Have you tried with VLC

Are you playing via a dual output card to projector and screen at the same time? Slim chance its some form of copy protection which might work just output to a single source or does something funny with a codec thats not being allowed to run as a normal user?

 

Try installing K-lite codec pack (possibly has copyright issues - be warned)and see if that fixes it.

I don't think this is a codec problem given that it will play on PowerDVD.

 

The 'only in administrator' problem with PowerDVD is probably due to the age of the PowerDVD software. When running as a normal user, PowerDVD can't see the DVD drive!
