Terminal Server Licenses (Devics vs User)

I wonder if anyone out there can advise me!

I consider myself to be "quite good" when it comes to Microsoft Licensing, but this one has got me a bit confused and I can't find an answer!

 

We have a Microsoft Schools Agreement for 300 desktop CALs and about 9 servers.

 

I've been sucessfully testing Terminal Services so that our staff (and maybe Students) could log on via TSWeb or the actual remote desktop application. Everything works fine and I'm in the position to move forward with the project. However, I need to make sure we're licensed!

 

When you install TS you get asked for per device or per user licensing....

From reading I've assumed that user licensing would be the best (as users will be logging on out of school etc?)

 

My questions are:

1) Is my theory on licensing per user the correct one?

2) Do I already have a collection of TS licenses as part of the Schools Agreement (i.e. maybe covered in the desktop CAL?)

3) An indication of any licensing costs would be good!

1. Per user is the way to go for you. If you have 30 TSCALS that means 30 people can use the server at once.

Wrong - Every user will need a per user CAL (they are NOT concurrent). Per device would meant that you license each user's machine. There is also the External Connector License (1 per server required) which allows connections from anywhere (I believe you also need per user licenses for your staff though).

 

I believe that pricing and what you are already covered for depends on the specifics of your agreement.

Another confusion in MS licensing, when i was enquiring a while back i was told this was the case. Sorry about that

Get enough cals to cover the students and staff (and then add 10% for leeway), and one for the server they connect too also. That way you should be covered with any eventuality. If you are over covered by some way, then it just means you add more users/machines without worrying about the licensing!

I also forgot to mention that you will need licensing for Windows Server too - your Desktop Pack might not cover external CALs.
