Backup solutions for server 2008 hyper-v

Hi

I was wondering if anyone was backing hyper-v up and if they have any solutions to do it. I currently run manualish backups on the server using windows server backup but we really need a full solution that does not cost the earth. I am looking at Backup exec but the hyper-v agent is £1000 per server and we would need to 2 as we run a cluster. Anyone got any solutions they are using?

I think that EMC have a product that will snapshot your SAN and dump it somewhere... a solution like that might be a better option?

 

I've just ordered two Sun 7100 Storage Systems so that I can create a redundant copy of the data and then back that up to the Sun SL24 Tape Library that I have also ordered. In theory I should then be able to chuck the data at any old piece of x64 tin and get back up and running in no time.

We currently use Microsoft Data Protection manager and have had no problems with backups. Not sure on price tho as we currently get our software free through our agreement.

 

Integrates nicely with all Microsoft software especially hyper-v, exchange etc.

 

Not tried with sql yet tho as thats to come soon

I actually was having a look at that today as a option. It seems nice but I hate the fact you cant use NAS storage easily.

I am trying find pricing myself as you pay for agents too I think.

Previous technician had Backup Exec installed by RM for the RM network but when I started we got rid of RM and went with a vanilla MS network but the technician never updated backup exec to reflect this so in effect we had no proper backup, since taking over backup duties I have implemented data protection manger.

 

Not sure on the NAS problems but I know DPM only likes direct attached storage so no USB drives, but I would assume ISCSI attached storage would work.

 

We use 4 sata hard drives in Raid 5 with a basic raid card then the DPM backups are backed up to an external HD via ntbackup/server backup for weekly offsite backups

thanks to this thread I'm now investigating MDPM may put it on my new SAN since it will sit on Storage Server...
