it all began after we had a power cut a few weeks back and now when we try to run certian programs from one of the windows 2000pro machines (Virtual pc 2004 to name but 1) it says "The procedure entry point GetRawInputDeviceList could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll" I cannot understand it because it was working fine before the power cut now it just comes up with the error then exits the application.

any ideas or input apart from upgrading to XP  would be greatly appreciated

Have you tried re-installing DirectX?

The alternative would be to get a known working copy of the USER32.DLL file and put that on your machine. It isn't working now, so if it doesn't work you haven't lost anything.

sfc /scannow or reinstall 2000.

this may sound a bit dumb but where can i get sfc /scannow or is that a ms-dos command

as for the USER32.dll file are all the files the same or would i need to get one from a machine similar to mine

If you have another 2000 Pro system then just copy it from that one. Use the sfc /scannow first though (run that from the command line).

have tried sfc and to no avail the system is still as bad as before and when i try to load a new user32.dll it says that the file is being used by windows.

i have also tryed using regsvr32 to stop it and loading in safemode and both of the above together but nothing is helping it just says that it is being used by windows.

i have also had our domain admin (MM) have a look and play with it and his comment was" Strange try rebooting in safemode and removing" but alas it would not rewrite, replace or delete it.

the file i have in use is about 10 times bigger than the standard one and is this normal?

the only other solution would be to paste it somewhere else and rewrite the registry to divert the paths if anyone knows how/ if it is possible?

any ideas anyone?

Rerun windows setup on it and choose the option to repair?

Ben

The first thing i did was to run setup and then go through as if you are going to reinstall then at the 3rd screen choose repair unfortunatly this didnt work.

and when i run regsvr32 C:\WINNT\system32\user32.dll to unload the dll i get an error stating that the dll was loaded but the dllregister server entry point was not found.

directX issues with windows 2000 are a rather known problem that i discovered lately; the fact is, one must install SP4 and the patches (especially the KB824141) before installing directX 9.0b, else you get the problem you have specified above. you will probably have to do a fresh install of 2000.

Hope this helps

This was reserved for a last resort as it would require the webserver going offline for 2 days while i install and fix. Looks like i will be having a fun filled weekend and doing a backup on monday when the system is back online.

Thanks for all your help guys and by the way can anyone recommend a good backup system or software to impliment on a windows 2000 pc with sp4
