I think there could be some mileage in teachers and or head being able to microblog/twitter on to the local network/intranet publicly or privately

 

It would be a way of

1. getting information across

2. promoting positivity

3. allowing kids to feel more connected to their teachers/head

4. promoting private discussion.

only teachers would have write functionality. pupils can read the public stuff.

 

the doesnt seem much going in free twitter clone scripts atm. Only Laconica which seems insanely (overly) complicated.

 

I want an easy/simple liberum-esq Home - Liberum Help Desk , ntlm auth, cdosys email connection, access db

asp equivalent.

 

tinkering with existing asp is about my level. I dont have the patience or the know-how to make stuff from scratch. anyone interested?

I set this up at my last place, by mass-hosting Wordpress blogs for each department, all of whom made a total of one post (actually PE made two) before getting bored. The difference seems to be that teachers don't live and die by twitter/blog interaction, and don't sit in front of a machine with any particular regularity, while students do moreso.

Could do it with sharepoint pretty easily - per department maybe?

Sharepoint could be good as it is not just one tool, but a range of tools. The problem with moodle is that people sometimes forget the other tools that are there, but these can be more 'in your face' with sharepoint at times.

 

A simple thing to do is to have a team space ... this can have calendared meetings with an online copy of the agenda, resource documents, etc. It will take some getting used to but becomes the virtual department noticeboard too.

 

Any tools that takes something they do already and adds to it will be the key to getting them involved ... and once you have them in one area it is not a leap to make them use somewhere else too.

 

To get conversations between students and staff going try making use of surveys to get feedback.

 

Also have a look at tools such as Power League | Home for something more fun than just a team space.
