Disabling Exchange

I’m moving Exchange over to a new server next week and while EMBC change the forwarding to the new server I would like to stop the old server from receiving mail. Is there a way apart from disconnecting the internet to achieve this?

Stop the exchange services? Why would you want to make your site unable to recive emails untill you have fully migrated, surely a smooth switchover from one to the other would be better?

If I remember correctly the last time I moved Exchange servers it went something like this:

 

Moved mailboxes from old server to new server.

EMBC still forwarding to old server as changeover sometime that day. So mail still comes to old server. With no mailboxes, mail bounces.

if you disable exchange it some way it will bounce anyway.

 

Can you not give the new server the same IP as the old one?

Mail will not bounce if the server can’t be contacted. EMBC will just keep trying until it times out which I think with the EMBC the time out period is 14 days. Can’t really change the server IP as the old server will be on line for a few weeks yet as it’s still running other services.

I think this is right but hopefully someone will confirm.

 

if you put the new server in the same exchange organisation then exchange will automatically redirect mail to the server that contains the mailbox. once the migration is complete you then switch the IPs or change the forwarding and adjust the prioritys in the routing group in ESM

 

once this is done run the commands to move the public folders and other stuff then un-install exchange from the old server.

 

this properly removes the server from the organisation and takes it out of the routing groups.

 

check that the new server has all the appropriate roles installed and configured and check that external IPs point to the new server for webmail.
