Really? I've never had any problems with Seagate, not for at least 3 yrs or more down the line.

 

The only except is when I get them from ebuyer and there idea of packaging. IE loads on top and nothing underneath.

The main issue people have with seagate at the moment is the recent cockup with firmware on loads of models of there drives see link below,

Are you going to RAID those Terabyte drives? I remember reading somewhere that due to various technical reasons RAID isn't recommended, but I haven't a clue as to why.

 

A lot of the newer Intel server boards also come with 6 SATA connections.

I have the asus p5ql-e, which is similar to the above. It's a nice board but very finicky. According to the doco that came with it, RAID doesn't work with M$ operating systems out of the box. You basically have to run software RAID.

 

If you run Fedora 9, the RAID controller will work fine, but it won't be recognised under Fedora 10, as they have removed a key kernel module.

 

If you run Suse 11.0 or 11.1 it will recognise the RAID controller, but I could not get the LVM to work, I had to use disk partitioning to get volumes.

 

Mandriva 2008 will recognise it on install, but kernel panic on boot. Mandriva 2009 works perfectly.

 

The built-in ASUS Express Gate is a good feature if you want to access the internet but not boot your machine. I can see this as being very useful if, for example, the hard drive dies and you want to order another online.

Is this resolved with the fireware now? Or still ongoing?

 

Depends on how new the drive you end up with is, there are firmware upgrades avalible but these have apparently brisked several of the 600GB ones. The newest drives don't have this issue but there is no guarentee of getting one as Segate has not recalled the affected drives as 'their' failure records don't indicate that the problem is wide spread. Other sources estimate the failure rate at 30%. There is an EG thread here avout the fault including the solutions:

Unfourtunatly I have one of the affected drives but it has not failed yet. I need to rip it out and put it in a newer machine with native SATA to upgrade it through so have not tested the firmware update yet.

It is to do with the rebuild time as because there is so much data to replicate the chances of another drive failing during the rebuild are much larger which is why the recommend RAID6, for even larger drives like 1.5TB there are concerns even about RAID6.
