SurfControl blocking staff from Facebook?

We have a SurfControl server linked to a Novell eDirectory, basically we had big server issues and both were knocked out for a week or two. (The eDirectory worked still but off another Novell server).

 

SurfControl and main Novell server back online today, now users in the "staff" context can't access Facebook as it is filtered under Personals/Dating, checked the rules in place and there are none that deny Personals/Dating other than to the "student" context.

 

Any ideas? I don't think anyone has made any changes, certainly not me.

 

I know it isn't a mission critical website to lose, but some staff who buy me pints at the local pub may soon make me pay if I don't resolve this!!

If you specifically add facebook to the allowed list for staff, does this then affect students also? (Trying to see whether they're linked or whether it's just the staff one not working!)

I would check that the staff are not also a part of the students group and that your staff allow rule is above the students one so that it takes pressidence. I may also be tempted to recreate the staff allow rule to re-link it to the appropriate novel group id.

 

Here we have a whitelist of approved sites for staff at the top of the list of rules that allows certain specified sites through for staff no matter what rules are applied further down the list.

Our policy is that unless staff can prove to me (and the Principal) that a website has a justifiable educational use I won't allow access.

Regardless of the site; if the issue is wider spread (ie. the staff rule doesn't work at all) then they will need to resolve it when another site (of less political stance) comes up.

Seems abit harsh, what you going to do, Ban all books and newspapers that have not been approved by you ?

 

At least you can monitor the net usage , you cant montior time wasted reading Nutz magazine
