Hello,

Looking at buying a NAS box as our server is low on storage. I know they come with Raid 5 etc - looking at Buffalo or one of HP ones.

How do you guys back them up? I'm using them to store shared area and staff Home Drives.

Thanks

Using them in that capacity you'd probably be better off with something that supports iscsi then you can just attach storage to your exisiting servers.

The other thing that you could look at if the raid controller in your server supports it is an external drive shelf that would allow you to have many more drives effectivly attached to your existing server. I am not sure that a NAS box will give you the needed throughput to deal with student home areas and documents as they usually have limited processing and hence serving power.

You could also look at building a seporate box that has a couple of RAID controllers and the FreeNAS OS on it to more cheaply build a custom box that has enough power to support that amount of clients.
