Where to put ISPs Proxy in ISA 2004

We are using an ISA 2004 server and all the XP clients use it as the proxy in IE. The logs show that almost 100% of the requests are passed directly out to the internet though - the ISA's cache is not used at all (perhaps 1 request a day)

I think it is due to the fact that we are using the Web Chaining feature to point requests at the LEA's proxy server upstream.

 

What is the proper way to set up the ISA with an ISP's proxy (which cannot be bypassed, by the way)

On my ISA server the Web Chaining Default Rule is set on the Action Tab to redirect them to an Upstream Server, which is the authorities proxy. The To tab is set to apply to All Networks (and localhost).

Proxies by default should not cache content that's avalible on another proxy. It's specified in the RFCs. I don't know very much about ISA so I can't say if you can change that behavior. However it's certainly possible to force caching with Squid.

 

I don't see why you'd need to cache content that's avalible on your upstream proxy though. There would be little performance improvement for some fairly sizeable storage requirements.

Yep, that's exactly how mine is set. Do your reports look the same as mine then?

Cheers Geoff. Our Internet is pretty flaky at the moment, so caching on site would be a great help until the borough get things sorted. I'd much prefer to not use the borough's cache at all but that doesn't appear to be an option. I presume that MS will follow the RFC you mentioned, so yes, that must the reason that our cache is not working.

You can specify when it should use it's cache in the cache rule.

 

Create a new one as you can't change all options in the Default rule.

 

You can then choose from 3 options of wether to use the cached object or get it from the internet, try setting it to retrieve all objects from cache unless there is no object and then tell it to drop the request hehe.
