2000 Server Time

Ive got a win 2k server domian controller, and what ive noticed with it is that the time is always speeding up, so in a space of 2 weeks, it managed to become 10 minutes faster then the correct time...

 

has anyone had this issue, and is there a fix for it

You need to setup the NTP client on the domain controller to point at a NTP server on the internet.

 

You can either use GPO's (make sure you only apply it to domain controllers). The settings are under Computer Settings -> Admin Templates -> System -> Windows Time Service.

 

or you can set it from the command line.

 

net time /setsntp:time.server.address

 

You can use a public time server on the internet (check out http://www.pool.ntp.org ) or you can use your Internet providers NTP server. Our LEA blocks NTP here for example, so I have to use their servers.

 

You must make sure you do not interfere with the clients though. They have to syncronise themselves with the DC(s) rather than an external source. Bad things will happen otherwise.

We have had exactly the same problem, and it was also replicating across to our two 2k3 DC's too. After a day mucking around in gpedit looking at and configuring the NPT, i eventually gave up, installed atomtime pro and set it to check clocks every three hours. The problem is now resolved
