I've free day tomorrow and was hoping to use some of the time to set up Apache, MySql and PHP on an XP laptop and have a run through turning it into a WAMP server before moving up to a full server environment. Can anyone point me in the direction of useful online documentation, please?

I want to do it the hard way, installing each individual component rather than use wamp. How good is wamp as a fully blown server environment, rather than a testing environment?

why is it necessary to use windows as a base for this?

I find that amp works better on *nix. I can understand if you wanted IIS or asp, but....

there's always running a lamp environment from a virtual machine as well.

This removes the licence issue.

Anyway, try this or alternatively this but use the most recent versions (eg mysql5)

We use WAMP on our vle and it works a treat. Not had any problems at all. It works virtually "straight out the box". The only thing you need to do is edit the apache config to tell it what IP address to listen on.

What are you wanting to use it for?

because I'm not the NM. We use MS exclusively.

Curently have Apache2Triad, which is no longer supported and need to move up to something more appropriate. Host the website and VLE in house.

I made up this document when I was doing the same as you. I did it the same way as you want, installing each component individually, checking as I go. I would also recommend you install PHPMyAdmin, as it makes managing the MySQL a lot easier.

Hope it helps!

Or so said the other half. Ended up doing it on New Year's day. It was good to try the full blown way, and after some headache inducing moments I managed to sort it.

Did try WAMP as well, but couldn't figure out how to set the password to access PHPAdmin.

Accessing phpmyadmin you could have done through mysqladmin/mysql command line interface which you'd have used in the manual process.

Nonetheless, doing it both ways is pleasant for learning.

I will now have your babies :bowl:, I hope this works on the server Im messing with.

P.S im guessing as this takes you right up to the requirments for joomla it wouldn't be too hard to do tht tooooo.....

I put the edugeek joomla on our intranet site with no issues at all. The original reason I set up the wamp server was for moodle. The only extra thing I had to enable for that was ladp module in php as we use ladp authentication for logging into moodle.
