2003 DC & Exchange to 2008 DC and 2008 Exchange

Hello everybody

 

Please can I have some suggestions before I monumentally screw up my network...

 

We currently have a (Steadily Failing) 2003 (not R2) server which is the DC and runs AD, DNS, DCHP & Exchange 2003. [Fileserver]

 

I have setup a new 2008 DC Server, added it to the domain and DCPromo'd it.

Everything seems to be working fine. [DCServer-01]

 

I have also setup a new 2008 Server and added it to the domain with the intention of making it the Exchange Server. [ExchangeServer]

 

I am about to move the DHCP onto the new DCServer-01 which shouldn't cause too many issues.

 

Now, what should be my next step?

 

Ultimately I need to demote FileServer and throw it down some stairs, so I need to make sure that all Domain related things (All the FSMO Roles) have been moved over onto DCServer-01.

[Just a sidenote before anybody has a moment, after the new DC and Exchange servers are setup, I will be setting up a 2nd backup DC Server)

And I need Exchange and all the mailboxes etc moved onto ExchangeServer.

 

I am confident I am able to move the FSMO Roles but am afraid if I do anything in the wrong order, I may destroy Exchange and/or the mailbox store.

AFAIK theres no order in transferring the roles over, I'd do that task first, make sure you yick the box in sites and services that make the new server a Global Catalo, you'll have issue logging on if you dont! once thats done it will just be case of migrating your mail stores.

Another sidenote:

I know not to demote the old DC with Exchange on until Exchange has moved across to new server 100%

One I missed was to ensure any custom Outlook forms had been copied across. If you have created any then send yourself one of each as it is easy to then rebuild any lost forms from an original.

I annoyed a LOT of my users when I did not do this!
