How to find/salvage a hard drive

Hello All!

 

My hard drive crashed, and I'm trying to find a replacement to have the info switched out.

 

I need to find out where or how I can find specifically a Samsung HD501LJ hard drive Made in Korea 2007.06

 

Does anyone know how to or know someone who works in data recovery or anything like that, who can find such a specific hard drive?

Search ebay for the drive type and email the seller asking for the required details to see if its teh right one. Remember you will need the same model and hardware revision, the date of manufacture is not as important.

 

This method of recovery will probably only work if it is the board on the drive that is fired and if that type of drive is stacicaly mapped. Some newer drives are tuned individually at the factory to get the best out of less than perfect platters.

Unfortunately, I cannot find any BIOS/firmware detail on the drive. Is there anywhere online which would tell me what type of firmware is on it?

The hardware revision would be printed on it after the modle number like "REV: B" or "HW REV: 0E" either on the lable or the circut board. If the drive shows up in the BIOS of your computer properly it is unlikely that the board is at fault.

Well, it is a very similar drive to this one: Auctiva Image Hosting

 

And the label is very similar, but I can't exactly find a BIOS/firmware listing... Are there databases online somewhere, where I could find this information?

The drive in your picture is labled REV. A just under the (500GB/7200rpm/16M). Perhapse you could post a well focused picture of your drive up here so that we could have a look. There is no database that I know of.

Well, unfortunately, I am out of the country for the next week or so, trying to help solve this problem from abroad. I can take a look at the drive myself once I get in to the country. Thank you for your help!

Have you tried software based recovery utilities?

Stick it in an plastic bag, [ wrap it up ], shove it in a freezer for 9 hours, take it out, wire it up and if it fires up get as much data as you can off it before it goes again. On my experience I get about a 50% success rate.....

Yep, this is a good mehod to use, its good to try and keep it as cold as possible also so try doing it in a nice closed off fully air conned server room, set it as cold as possible!

If you are paying for a data recovery firm to do it then you shouldn't try any diy on it yourself.

 

If you are trying to diy it and change the controller or somesuch your mileage will vary.
