6Foot2 Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 (edited) I need to create a nested set of folders in MyDocuments for students when they logon. The folder structure I need is as follows: In Home folder: Application Data\Microsoft\Excel I have tried to do this in Active Directory as follows: User configuration/Windows Settings/Folders Then in the right hand pane right click New/Folder. Action: Create. No matter what I do [Creating the entire folder structure all at once or each folder one-by-one] nothing happens. What an I doing wrong? Server O/S: Windows server 2008 Standard: 64 Bit. Workstation: Windows XP Pro: SP3. Any ideas? Scrub that. Cracked it now. Edited December 2, 2008 by 6Foot2

6Foot2 Posted December 2, 2008 Author Posted December 2, 2008 I will post more tomorrow. Had to leave the office in a hurry today. Now I am in no condition to post a coherent reply [hic] Will detail all in the morning.
6Foot2 Posted December 3, 2008 Author Posted December 3, 2008 Our student users are broken up into year groups in Active Directory [like most schools I suspect] So a year 7 student will be in the Students/YOI2008 OU. The folder structure mirrors the Active Directory structure. The home folder for a Year 7 students is: \\Servername\YOI2008\Username\Cached\ [The Cached folder for the MyDocuments is a relic from the old Viglen network I wanted to retain] To create the folders I wanted at logon I used Group Policy Manager and created a GPO in each student OU and gave it a name which describes the function. Thus for Year 7 the GPO is called: "YOI2008 Create Custom Folders At Logon" I then edited this GPO going to: User Configuration/Windows Settings/Folders. In the right hand pane I Right clicked and selected: New/Folder Action: Create Path: \\Servername\YOI2008\%Username%\Cached\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel Attributes ticked: Hidden: Archive Select the "Common" tab Tick the box: Run in logged-on user's security context (user policy option) I then made sure that the changes had been kept did a "GPUpdate /Force" and logged on as a test user in Year 7. It worked I then created a similar GPO for each year group in Active Directory changing only the name of the GPO and the YOI200? value as appropriate. I don't know why It would not work the first way I tried it [i would have liked it to because that way there would have been one policy to apply to all students] but this way works so I am not going to knock it. Sorry if this has been a little too wordy but I wanted to be as clear as possible. If anyone can suggest a better way of achieving the same ends I would be happy to hear of it but this is my solution for now.
