It seems there's more and more educational apps requiring an SQL database these days usually MSDE.

Obviously budgets may mean that you can just bring on-line another server every time the ICT Coordinator buys a new app. Do you host more than one on the same server.

Has anybody attemped to install an app on a server where WSUS is already installed. WSUS uses WMSDE which a special version of MSDE without the perofmance restrictions but limited to certain MS server apps. This means an app from another company can't just grab another instance. This is to be expected as Microsoosft aren't going to kill the SQL Server 2000/5 golden goose.

Can you have WMSDE and vanilla MSDE installed on the same server?

I have Sophos EM and WSUS on the same server without problems. SQL is designed to have the ability to run multiple instances. Obviously this depends on the hardware and the amount that the database is accessed.

If you don't like the MSDE restrictions, you could also try the Express edition of SQL 2005 which would be satisfactory for most situations and is free for non-commercial use.

I also have Sophos and WSUS on the same server. But I have Veritas Backup Exec on it too (uses another instance). It works fine.

The only issue I've had with WSUS is with IIS. Sometimes you have to set it up on its own port/website instance. The installer usually detects when it needs to do this (Sharepoint caused this IIRC) and set it to port 8530 by default.

Also, the 'better written' apps should allow you to choose where the database goes. Therefore, if you have an SQL server, you can set up the database in an existing instance.
