All staff are using Word 2003 and when they try to save a new document, make changes or attempt to save they get this error message:

Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error. Do you want to retry the save. Yes or no.

If I say yes the system will save the document under a new name for example: WRL1234.tpm. If I say no, I loose everything.

Please help.

P.S. The school is using Symantec Endpoint Security 11.

I don't know if this helps or not.

I would think that this is caused by folder permissions...

1. Where are they trying to save the document?

Is their default save location somewhere daft (i.e. other than their home folder)

What permissions does the user have on this folder?

2. Where does the temporary file get saved?

3. Is this happening to all users or just some?

Can you as administrator save anything?

1. On a network drive

2. The user has 'modify' permission

3. All users

4. As an admin I can save to it. Non-admins can't.

This problem occurred since last Friday.

My question wasn't specific enough, sorry :o

What file path are they trying to save to? You need to check the permissions on this path.

You can get this problem, if the Word File Location (Tools > Options) for Documents is something it shouldn't be.

The TMP file is a temporary (recovery) file and may be being saved on a dfiferent file path. You need to check this out.

I've had a look, elsiegee40, and all appears fine. The autorecovery is set to users Application Data. Saving location is set to their My Documents, and everything else (clipart, templates, etc) is set to the C drive.

I'm stumped as to what the problem is. Permissions on the network drives haven't changed. Do you have any more suggestions?

Have you actually tried doing File > Save As on one of the affected logons and looking at the file path you get in the Save box (click on the drop-down arrow)? Is it what you expect it to me?

I have tried doing Save As and it will always point to a person's own user area. It's only whe they do the Save As and try saving it on a network drive is when the problem occurs.

Had a look on the Symantec website and it's a fault that lies with its AV. If I upgrade to the Maintenance Release 3.0, the problem should be eroded. However, I'm just a trainee tech and the NM is off on long term sickness. I don't know how to do this. :(

Just to let people know that this problem I was having is no longer an issue. By simply upgrading Symantec Endpoint Security 11 to 11.0.3#### (Maintenance Release 3) cured all our problems. Staff and students are now able to save work directly to any one of the shared network drives through Word rather than having to copy and paste from their user area to the drives.

Hope this helps others that may be experiencing the same symptoms.
