Hi we are currently looking to implement a new VMware enviroment including a san. When we have migrated to virtual we will be left with a few servers,. I was wanting to host the servers off-site and with a nas os on them. What is the best way to automate backups to the remote location, to the nas. Has anyone got any suggestions for software etc.

Thanks:)

Tehre are numerous software solutions available for this at the momenet... it's big business. You really need to speak to a virtualisation specialist.

You should also look into alternative virtualisation technologies... VMWare is popular but mainly because it is the most mature. I opted for Citrix XenServer instead, saving me thousands yet still getting the functionality that I required - when Sun xVM is finally released that should be extremeley promising too.

Anyway... enough waffle... basically, I'm saying that there are lots of options. I found Cetus Solutions (0161 8484315) really helpful on the virtualisation side and Westwood Associates (01753 881810) were also very competitive on the quotes.

this will be a disaster recover at regular intervals every nite, or even copy the snapshots during the school working day.

Another vote for rsync over an SSH connection. Available for Windows and Linux, free of charge.
