DNS & Aliases (CNAMES).

Hi.

We've currently installed a Smoothwall filtering box here, and in light of Linux not liking underscores in server names, ive had to wack AD/DNS on our IIS server.

What im wondering, is that if i create a alias in the DNS for one of our main ADs with a compatible name, will that allow smoothwall to use that as its auth server?

Or do aliases only work in certain scenarios?

 

Ive wacked a test alias in my DNS for one of them now, when its propogated, im gonna see if i can ping the new name...

Hi,

 

If you set up and alias in DNS for say Serverone that resolves to Server_one then I would presume that as it is just going to resolve the alias to the actualy hostname that it would not work with SW, as you say SW does not like _'s.

 

Why do you want to use IIS anyway when you have SW, you should go for Apache on a seperate box either on the RED for External access or GREEN for Internal then setup DMZ for access either way.

or rather than using aliases just use IP addresses - I'm guessing that you will have static IPs for your DCs!
