Rolling out thunderbird without having students configure it

Having got rid of outlook express etc, and moved our email to a squirrelmail system a few years ago, it has been asked if I could set something up for mailto: forms etc, and office`s send via email links.

 

I could use thunderbird, but would really like to make it "auto configuring" as the settings are all the same bar the username.

 

Has anyone done this?

You can script this. The configuration is XML and lives in the users profile. Your favorite script languages XML/text handling functions should be able to cope with it.
