As above. The DNS server is not responding until a user is logged on the server. well actually it may only apply to requests which need forwarding onto the internet; i will post back once i confirm this.

Anyone ever heard of this happening, any suggestions??

Its just when forwarding onto the internet. Really strage problem as it only when theres noone logged onto the DNS server. As soon as i loog on everything works, i log back off and it doesnt.

whats the dns server service doing? log off the server then from a workstation go to computer managment and run a remote connection from that mmc to the server and check the status of the dns server service.

Cheers for the replys people. Tryed all theose already; its running under the system account as it should, starts on startup as expected with no errors. It responds to internal queries but just not ones bound for t'internet.

Probably related is we lost a few of our Root Hints today causing lose of/intermitant internet access. Fixed this and everything seems fine... but only when someones logged on!
