I'm looking for a Cyber Security Specialist to join me at the University of Buckingham.

 

Cyber security is becoming increasingly important across every aspect of the University, and we're looking for someone who can help us continue improving our security posture while taking a practical, proportionate approach that supports the wider needs of the institution.

 

This isn't a role where you'll spend all day writing policies or sitting in governance meetings. I'm looking for someone who enjoys getting hands on, whether that's improving the secure configuration of Microsoft 365, reviewing infrastructure, working with colleagues to remediate vulnerabilities, supporting Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus, or helping shape how we approach cyber security across the University.

 

We've got plenty going on over the next year, including a campus-wide network refresh, continued investment in our infrastructure, and a number of security improvement projects, so it's a genuinely interesting time to join.

You'll work closely with colleagues across IT as well as staff from across the University. A big part of the role is helping people understand cyber security, explaining risks in a sensible way, and finding practical solutions that balance security with the realities of a modern university.

 

I'm particularly interested in people who:

• Have a strong technical background in infrastructure, networking, systems administration or cloud technologies
• Have hands on experience implementing or supporting cyber security controls rather than purely advising on them
• Have experience of Cyber Essentials, Cyber Essentials Plus or similar security frameworks
• Enjoy solving technical problems and continuously improving how things are done
• Can explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical colleagues
• Want to take ownership and help shape how cyber security develops across the University

 

You don't need to tick every box. Some of the best candidates I've worked with have come from infrastructure or engineering backgrounds before specialising in cyber security, so I'm much more interested in technical ability, attitude and a willingness to learn than a perfect CV.
