A white dwarf is siphoning hydrogen from a red giant companion until it ignites, roughly every 80 years. Its last outburst was in 1946, and the next "eruption" (nova) is expected soon...

There are two stars, one large and one small. The small one is pulling matter from the surface of the large one (the gravitational attraction of the large one is lower at its surface, and so the material there is less strongly bound) The infalling matter accumulates on the surface of the smaller star until it ignites. After that, the cycle starts again.
